The concept of schutzhund evolved over 100 years ago in Europe when concerned dog owners set up a training and testing program for privately owned working dogs. The first Schuzhund Trial was held in 1901.  The intent of these trials was to emphasize and evaluate the correct working temperment and working ability of the breed.  The dogs and handlers enjoyed working as a team in the three categories of the Schutzhund ("protection dog") program: Tracking, Obedience, and Protection.
Today the exercises have changed slightly and, depending on the Schutzhund degree, consist of the following:
tracking.jpg
Tracking: The dog must retrace the path of a person (400-1500+ yards with 2-4 turns) after 20-60 minutes have elapsed and be able to find 2-3 lost articles, regardless of weather conditions.
obedience.jpg
Obedience: The dog must follow the handler's orders to heel both on and off leash, jump, retrieve, retrieve over a 6 foot wall, and send away. The dog must not be intimidated by any distractions, including the sound of a gun or a group of strangers milling about.
protection.jpg
Protection and Obedience under a Conflict Situation: The dog must, without handler assistance, respond properly in critical situations like finding and warning its handler of a hidden person, preventing an assault on his handler, and stopping the villain from escaping. The dog must distinguish between a harmless bystander and a potentially dangerous person. He must display courage but restraint on his own when the agitator gives up.
The sport of Schutzhund is open to dogs of all working breeds, including mixed breeds if they can do the work. Traditionally, German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Boxers, Dobermans, Rottweilers, Airedales, Bouviers, and Giant Schnauzers have been the most common, with the German Shepherd dogs outnumbering them all. Dog/handler teams from all over the world compete for degrees. Each level is increasingly more difficult to earn (SchH1 to SchH2 then to SchH3 degree). Available also are an Endurance certificate (AD), advanced Tracking Degree (FH1 and FH2), and Police Dog degrees for service handlers and others.
While Europe has enjoyed the benefits from the Schutzhund program for decades, Canada, until recently, adhered to the pet-obedience type of training. In 1979 the German Shepherd Schutzhund Clubs of Canada (GSSCC) was formed, bringing together individual clubs from across Canada. Trials are now held regularly with SV judges and many titles have been awarded.
People do not wish to share their house or community with a potentially dangerous dog. ANY large dog is potentially dangerous. The large dog needs to be handled by a responsible, knowledgeable person who will give alot of understanding, affection, love, attention, and MOST IMPORTANT of all, TRAINING to the dog. Anyone who lacks these basics should not even consider owning a dog, and definitely not one of the working breeds.
For the responsible, private working dog owner, however, the Schutzhund sport has proven to be an ideal program. Training can be done in very small groups, training locations are readily available, time requirements are reasonable, and benefits are obvious. Knowing how a dog behaves in critical situations is reassuring and provides better control over the animal, eliminating in fact, so-called viciousness. The result is a happy, friendly but alert, controllable family dog that becomes an asset, not a nuisance or even a danger to society.

Glossary of terms
Newcomers to Schutzhund can find themselves mighty confused when it comes to the abbreviations and acronyms they encounter. Sometimes, the old-timers can’t remember what they stand for either! Especially when they’re based on words from another language!
There are too many to cover every conceivable acronym that you are going to encounter. However, these are the most likely to cause confusion in the sport of Schutzhund. They are presented here in alphabetical order, for ease of reference, with links to related abbreviations. Some explanation is provided where the meaning is not self-evident. This should help you make sense of the terms that are tossed around in conversation, and the alphabet soup that appears on pedigrees and in ads for dogs and litters.

So what should you look for when buying a German Shepherd?
Pedigree
The pedigree of a dog tells its own story. Who were the parents? Did they win awards? Pass physical tests? And, what does that mean? Well, German breeders evaluate the whole dog; its character, intelligence, performance ability and physical structure. They do this by training their dogs in
Schutzhund trials and Sieger shows.
Schutzhund Trained
Schutzhund Trained Dog trials are the most mentally and physically demanding of all performance events. Schutzhund trials combine three types of events: tracking, obedience, and protection. Schutzhund titles are awarded at three levels of increasing difficulty. SchH.I, SchH.II, and SchH.III. In Germany, a dog must pass all three levels before they are 3 1/2 years old in order to be considered as a breeding animal.
Schutzhund training certification is done in a single day. The Schutzhund German Shepherds must be able to track a scent, perform off leash commands, scale a 6 foot wall and perform defense work. They are also required to gait for 9 miles at about 6 miles per hour! These dogs become the best in obedience, temperament, protection, courage, and confidence.
We have selected dogs that are Schutzhund trained because it has been proven to result in a sounder, more accurate breed.
Breed ratings such as VA & V can only be awarded at a Sieger Show. The dogs entered have to be at least 24 months old. They are required to be schutzhund titled, koerklassed, and have the German “a” stamp for their hips.
Sieger shows are a three day event. The first day the dogs must pass the schutzhund trials, if they do not they will not be allowed to go any further. The second day, the dogs are inspected by a German Judge and Koermeister, this is very extensive, and everything is checked: the movement, obedience, temperament and even the counting of the teeth. Again, if they pass, they can go forward to the third day. This day the dog gets to compete in the show ring. At this point the dogs will have to gait around the ring for hours while the judges watch their movement and stamina. Only the healthiest dogs with correct structure can pull on a lead for this amount of time. The Judges position dogs during this phase so that the best, are in the front until they are satisfied with the order of the dogs. In addition to all of this, they will shoot a blank pistol over the top of the dogs to test for courage. After all of this, only a small percentage of the dog’s that made it to the 3rd day of the show will receive the V rating. VA rating is only awarded at the annual Sieger show by competing against the top V rated dogs. VA is the highest rating a dog can acquire from the German judges.
Koerklass ratings are awarded 1 & 2 and are written like this: Kkl1 or Kkl2, 1 being the best. The koerklassing of a dog consists of many things, such as structure, over all health, appearance, conformation, temperament, movement and even schutzhund abilities of the dog. The list goes on and on. This rating can only be given at a koering event by the koermeister. This is a separate event for this only . LBZ is an abbreviation for Lebenszeit, which means Koered for Life. The first koering is done at 2 years of age and expires after two years. Between the ages of 4 & 5 you must re-koer the dog, then this becomes LBZ "koered for life"
Only off spring bred from dogs that have acquired the LBZ can qualify to go VA themselves.
Hip Certification: Germany uses the "a" stamp, The USA uses the OFA
